What Can Be Treated

Benign Tumors

Chordomas

Chordomas is a rare slow-growing malignant tumor that usually occurs in the spine and base of the skull. This type of tumor only represents about one to four percent of tumors on the brain and spinal column.

Chordomas is commonly found in patients between 40 and 70 years of age. This malignant tumor is occasionally found in younger patients and even children. The average age of people affected is about 55. Chordomas can cause death by direct growth or by spreading to other organs, such as the lungs (20-30 percent of the time).

Treatment options will depend on the location of the tumor. Surgery is the preferred treatment when the malignant tumor is in a location to be successfully operated on. Gamma Knife Surgery is sometimes used in treating chordomas. Please consult with your Physician to see whether this type of non-invasive surgery may be applicable to your condition.
