Vascular MalformationsArteriovenous Malformations (AVMs)
Arteriovenous malformations, AVMs, are defects of the circulatory system that are characterized by tangled veins and arteries. While AVMs can develop in many parts of the body, those that develop in the brain or spinal cord have the greatest impact. In many cases neurological AVMs cause few symptoms. However for those that suffer from AVM side effects the impact can be significant. These symptoms include seizures, headaches, loss of coordination, muscle weakness, visual disturbances, problems understanding language, memory gaps and dementia.
While the official cause of arteriovenous malformations, AVMs is unknown, it is believed that they arise during fetal development.
One of the main risks with brain AVMs is hemorrhaging. This sudden bleeding can cause a significant impact to important areas of the brain. AVMs that do not bleed also pose a risk as they compress brain tissue and reduce the blood flow to area of the brain, therefore increasing the risk of nerve and cell damage.
Treatment varies for AVMs, for common ailments medication can relieve pain and headaches but for more severe conditions surgery or irradiation treatment may be needed. Gamma Knife Surgery is sometimes used in treating Arteriovenous Malformations, AVMs. Please consult with your Physician to see whether this type of non-invasive surgery may be applicable to your condition.
