Vascular MalformationsCavernous malformations
Cavernous malformation is a rare disorder of the central nervous system. The disorder occurs when a blood-filled mass resembling a tumor, called a hemangioma, forms. Cavernous malformations contain blood products at various stages of evolution and are usually less than 3 centimetres in size.
Cavernous malformations are responsible for 8-15% of all brain and spinal vascular malformations. They are found in individuals of all races and sexes. The male-female ratio is about equal. Typically around 0.5 percent of individuals may have a cavernous malformation.
Although some patients may be asymptomatic, there are several symptoms associated with cavernous malformations.
Two possible options for patients with cavernous malformations are surgery or no treatment. Gamma Knife Surgery is sometimes used in treating cavernous malformations. Please consult with your Physician to see whether this type of non-invasive surgery may be applicable to your condition.
