Brain TumorA Brain Tumor is an irregular accumulation of tissue in which cells divide uncontrollably in the brain. Brain tumors can be grouped into two categories, primary brain tumors, those that begin in the brain and tend to stay in the brain, and metastatic brain tumors - those that begin in the body and spread to the brain. It is estimated that there will be 44,685 new cases of primary brain tumors (malignant brain tumors and benign brain tumors) diagnosed in 2007. It is also estimated that over 100,000 cancer patients will have symptoms due to metastatic brain tumors or a metastatic brain tumor in the spinal cord. Treatment for brain tumors can include steroids, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or Gamma Knife surgery. Gamma Knife surgery is an effective treatment for patients who were formerly considered untreatable or at very high risk for open-skull surgery. Please consult with your Physician to see whether Gamma Knife surgery may be applicable to your condition.
